My Personal Experience...

My two and a half day journey began in Eugene Oregon, traveling along the coastal scenic route of Washington, through the Rocky Mountains of Montana, through the Great Plains of North Dakota, landing in snow capped Minnesnowta.

I met so many kind and wonderful souls on my little journey, with an exception of one or two not so fantastic experiences, however, I not once did I feel that it outweighed my good experiences. All of the seat neighbors I had and friendly bypassers passing seats were exceptionally fantastic, mostly women, and with truly enticing stories to share.  My only run in with some not so fantastic energy was when at the Seattle train station where I had a 5 hour layover. I hadn’t packed food since I was unaware of policy and did not want my food to be tossed, i decided to walk to a diner in Seattle only 8 minutes away. The diner was fancy (I was not), and was just as high priced as the train but at least this was palpable. I decided afterwards to find a little corner market to get some cheaper snacks (and they were. Only .75 instead of 3$….. for a candy Bar….). Typically your corner store in a downtown city is not going to be the safest bet. I only found that out walking around it and realizing I am so out of place and unaware of my surroundings and the area felt off. Quickly got my snacks, the counter fella was super kind, appreciated his good energy.

While walking around the outside of the station with another 3 hours to go, I found myself continuously around this one female (or she was around me). I had a bad feeling about her. At one point I decided she was just too close to my radar for trouble so I went inside the train station and hung out in there with an elderly couple. The inside of the Seattle train station was gorgeous, some of the most beautiful architecture and interior design I've seen in the area. Within minutes of me leaving the bathroom (taking a little travel selfie), I hear an bone-rattling scream coming from the bathroom. Many of us froze, some ran to further investigate to find a woman in the bathroom fighting back an attempted robbery and assault, by the woman who was giving me very bad vibes.  I’m incredibly blessed and lucky to not have been in that spot at the wrong time, and keen to my gut instincts to act when something doesn’t feel right.

What I WOULD have done differently and what I now advice others to do as well is IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING! This woman's cruddy interaction could have been prevented if someone (like myself) would have said there was suspicious activity around the train station as that is not taken lightly. As for the woman who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, she was alright, a bit shaken up but the staff seemed to be extremely helpful making sure her train didn't leave without her and that she was going to be taken care of for the rest of her trip. Overall, the majority of my trip felt easeful, excluding the rare event, and to me personally, didn’t linger on that for too long.

So on that note, rather than leaving you feel helpless, here is why I felt comfortable and confident in continuing my travels (even in the midst of chaos) and you can too!

Safety Tip 1

Keep your identification, passports, ticket, money, etc. with you at all times. Fold it up and put it in a zippered pants pocket, or I brought a Fanny pack intending to put my important things in there and wear it on my body at all times. So even when I’m fast asleep, someone would have to touch my body to get my things and I would respond (but more than likely they see that as too hard and risky and will likely not try to take your Fanny belongings , at least not stealth-fully).

Safety Tip 2

To make yourself feel a little more comfortable, get comfortable asking your train attendants questions. Be kind and courteous to others, try not to make any unnecessary conflict because you never know who you may offend and tick off so just be obliviously kind. Like my good friends the penguins from Madagascar would say; "Smile and wave boys. Smile and wave".

And even Better Yet! Make friends! Be open to casual chit chat. If the opportunity arises that you can have conversation over your Spotify playlist, honor it because that’s community and can come in handy if you.. let’s say didn’t pack food so new friends give you many snacks to hold you over (: or even just realizing that your Internet connection will come and go, but your train buddy is there to stay (at least until we arrive at their stop).

Safety Tip 3

Stay Alert! Don't blast your music in your headphones, I personally don't even listen to music until I am in my seat. But it is just as important to stay relaxed, cool, and confident in your traveling abilities.

I have a theory (i'm not alone in this one either) of the power of the law of attraction. If you expect bad things to happen, you're likely to draw that sort of energy in. Additionally to the energy aspect, it is scientifically proven that when you are stressed or not in a clear mind state, you're likely to forget things and inevitably cause yourself some actual grievances during your travel, i.e you likely won't forget your passport and have your entire travel experience halted or inconvenienced.

Additionally, move in confidence! If someone does have ill intentions, they'll likely seek out someone who is timid, nervous, or aloof. It's easier to steal when your target looks unthreatening or not looking at all, so stand big, look ahead not on the ground, and have confidence in your gut feelings!
